I went to a talk recently by the fabulous Angela Saini, author of Inferior: How Science Got Women Wrong and I asked her what actions we can take to combat gender inequality in the workplace. She said that women should stick together and support each other, that there is strength in numbers. How right Angela is. There’s no point us complaining about it, and yet it is difficult to make headway by ourselves. By working together to support each other we can make a difference. So the next time you see a woman being interrupted in a meeting, please stick up for her. When you next meet a woman needing a mentor, lend a guiding hand. Encourage the assessment of Resumes with names removed. Point out gender imbalance in committees, boards, and interview panels. And, importantly, seek out the support of other women for yourself. For none of us can do it alone.
