A few friends are going through a mid-career crisis of one sort or another at the moment. A career crisis can be incredibly frustrating and confusing and can often lead to a loss of self-confidence. However, they can also end up being blessings in disguise by providing the opportunity to rethink what a fulfilling career looks like to you, and by giving you the impetus to make positive career choices.
To help you identify which path to take, we have compiled a list of our top five books that can help you with what to do next.
1. What Color is Your Parachute by Richard Bolles
This book changed my life. I had a career aha moment when reading it. I got clarity on what type of job suited me best and gave me the most satisfaction. Prior to reading this book, I had blindly followed a career path without really thinking about what type of work I enjoy, what type of environment I want to work in, and what type of people I love to work with.
2. Finding Your North Star by Martha Beck
Martha Beck is a genius. She writes from the heart and points out the most obvious solutions that are right under our noses yet we fail to see them. She teaches you how to read and trust your own instincts. She helped me tap into my emotions around my work and personal life - emotions I hadn’t listened to before. Another enlightening book that will change the way you look at the world.
3. Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg
Sheryl Sandberg is an inspiration to women. She brought feminism back into mainstream workplace conversation. Her ‘lean in’ message has been controversial but she makes lots of great points in her book. Her TED talk is also worth a watch.
4. The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron
This is definitely more ‘woo-woo’ than the other books on our list but its just as impactful and thought-provoking. Julia’s ‘morning pages’ (an exercise core to the book) have become a hugely popular method of tapping into your creativity and rightly so. She takes a simple approach to unleashing the much-valued skill of creativity and it works.
5. Get a Life, Not a Job by Paula Caligiuri
This short book is about how our careers are now short "career acts" and that career longevity and stability is a thing of the past. It’s an easy read and opens up the idea of broadening our skills sets and income streams including alternative career paths.
